Rereading Nineteen Eighty Four – Part II – Chapter 4 -(1)

Winston takes the flat above Mr Charrington’s shop which he’d visited before to buy the diary and a paper weight. There is bed, a stove, and an old fashioned clock.

Winston waited for Julia.  He heard music from below.   The room is unique in that there is no telescreen.  Winston believes he is, for the first time, unwatched.

This ‘secret’  place that  was truly their own,  a place safe inside, easy to get to, was almost overwhelming.

As their work hours had increased due to the oncoming Hate Week, Julia and Winston had not been able to meet.

They had planned to meet in the clearing in the wood but she had to cancel due to her monthlies.   Winston had been  angry.  She had become a physical necessity.

He felt a deep tenderness, such as he had not felt for her before and wished they were married, had been married for a decade.  Wished he wished he could walk with her openly and without fear.
