Winston informed Julia of the forgeries he performed at the Ministry of Information.
He informed her of the story of three men, Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford, who once had existed and now were erased. He told her that he had held the paper on which their names were written, then destroyed it.
It made no impression on her. She didn’t grasp the point of his rewriting of history, instead asked if they had been his friends.
“… I never knew them. They were Inner Party members.ll They belonged to the old days, before the Revolution. I barely knew them by sight.”
And without the slightest empathy Julia asks; “‘Then what was there to worry about? People are being killed off all the time, aren’t they?”
He tried to clarify, to explain that it wasn’t just men being killed, but that he changed history and reality. To Julia that was commonplace, nothing to even mention.
