Rereading Nineteen Eighty Four – Part II Chap 9 (3)

Winston was at a Hate Week demonstration when the change of enemy happened. There were thousands of people  there.  The speaker of the Inner Party was holding forth when a messenger hurried on to the platform, slipped a scrap of paper into his hand. He unrolled and read it without pausing in his speech.

Nothing altered in his voice or manner, or in the content of what he was saying, but suddenly the names were different.   The enemy was no longer Eastasia but Eurasia.

A wave of understanding rippled through the crowd.

The banners and posters with which the square was decorated were all wrong! The immediate reaction was that  agents of Goldstein had been at work!

A riot began,  posters were ripped from the walls, banners torn to shreds and trampled underfoot. Within a few minutes the activity of the crowd was over, the orator, continuing his  speech.

The roars of rage burst from the crowd. The Hate continued exactly as before, except that the target had been changed.
