The Pittsburgh Steelers have to be optimistic about 2020 because they still ended up 8-8 even though QB Ben Roethlisberger was out for most of the season due to injury. Plus, QB Mason Rudolph did not die when Myles Garrett hit him with his own helmet. Adding some more players could put the Steelers back over the top for this season, so let’s take a look at who they picked in the NFL Draft.
Round 2, Pick 17: Chase Claypool – WR – Notre Dame (6’4″, 238 lbs). Claypool makes the Steelers WR corps way better with his unique combination of size and speed (4.42 40 at the combine). He ended up with over 1,000 yards receiving along with 13 TD’s even though he was double-teamed much of the time in college. He will contribute right away.
Round 3, Pick 38: Alex Highsmith – Edge – Charlotte (6’3″, 248 lbs). Highsmith wreaked havoc against opposing offenses last season with 21.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. Expect to see him on passing downs rushing the passer.
Round 4, Pick 18: Anthony McFarland – RB – Maryland (5’8″, 208 lbs). McFarland will compete to see some time as the 3rd-down back. He dropped in the Draft due to injury, but he is a threat to go to the house in open space.
Round 4, Pick 29: Kevin Dotson – G – Louisiana-Lafayette (6’4″, 310 lbs). Dotson will add depth to the offensive line at either guard spot.
Round 6, Pick 19: Antoine Brooks, Jr. – S – Maryland (5’11”, 220 lbs). Brooks adds depth to the safety position.
Round 7, Pick 18: Carlos Davis – DT – Nebraska (6’2″, 313 lbs). Davis will compete to see some time at nose tackle in the Steelers 3-4 defense.
Grade: The Steelers continue to have good drafts. I give this one a B-.
