Antique Fire Starter at the Adirondack Museum

This is an original fireplace starter stick from a famous Hotel in the Adirondacks from the early part of the last century. It is on display at the Adirondack Guideboat Museum (now called the Adirondack Experience) in Blue Mountain Lake in the Northern Adirondacks. The fire starter was a shaved down stick of dry wood of either local white cedar or white pine that had curls made with a knife or drawknife so that the fire in the fireplace could easily be started by patrons of the hotel. The Adirondacks were full of large hotels for the thousands of guests that visited during the summer months.
