My Current Obsession

My current obsession, which has been my obsession since the beginning of this year, is k-pop. When I say k-pop I actually mean BTS. If you don’t know who BTS is, then you have been living under a rock.

BTS stands for bangtan sonyeondan (방탄소년단) which translates to bulletproof boy scouts. This is a 7 member group from South Korean who have had a lot of success in America. From attending the BBMAs to actually performing there, these boys have a come along way. It’s just a shame that I just noticed them this year. The members of this group are RM (Kim Namjoon), Jin (Kim Seokjin), Suga (Min Yoongi), J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), Jimin (Park Jimin), Taehyung (Kim Taehyung), and Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook). These are the men that have raised my expectations way too high.

My obsession with them began at the beginning of this year when I was looking for some new music to listen. Regardless, I actually knew them way before this, but my views on K-pop were not good back then. Nevertheless, this group did finally capture my heart.

  • Their music talks about societal and the youth’s issues, and let me tell you. First listening to the songs, I didn’t really get them because I don’t speak Korean. But OH BOY when I found the lyrics translated, I think I might have cried. My favorite song form this Spring Day which is a song about missing someone and some have speculated that it’s connected to the Sinking of the MV Sewol. The chorus lyrics Bogo Shipda (보고 싶다) means I miss you, and throughout the song they things like If I was snow, I could get to you faster. If that isn’t beautiful then I don’t know what is. I have so many more examples, but I want to get to another reason why I’m obsessed with them.
  • Not only do they make good music, but they are some of the most talented, genuine, kind, and cutest people I have ever seen. They don’t brag about their wins. They don’t ask for many views on their music videos. They don’t even act like they think they’re higher than everyone one. They are millionaires, but a lot of times they don’t act like it. They are some of the most unselfish people I have seen, and I think that’s why they have so many fans supporting them. The member’s different personalities have also taught me a lot about myself. For example, Taehyung is considered the weird one in BTS, but does he care? NO. Their flaws have taught me to embrace my flaws.

Lastly, I wanted to add that their fanbase, though sometimes toxic, is one of the best fan bases I have ever been in. BTS’s fans are called A.R.M.Y which stands for Adorable Representative MC of Youth, and I am proud to call myself an ARMY. There are some funny people in this fandom, and it feels like a family. There are some bad apples, but through thick and thin we stick together ( Especially to shut down antis). My current obsession, which has been my obsession since the beginning of this year, is BTS because once you JimIN, you can’t JimOUT.

“If you take BTS out of the alphabet how many letters would be left?

19

Why?

Because BTS never leaves without its ARMY”
