Paul Mollusk, despite the warnings from the older members of the Board, offered the position of Matron to Selma Rashford Grindley.
He knew she was two steps from the road, having lost the family home, on the verge of being evicted from the house she was living in which had been sold.
As no member of the Church wanted her in their homes, and as he knew Selma to be a loud mouthed attention seeker, the newspapers would front page her homelessness and embarrass the church.
Any publicity would be bad publicity, considering they were running a dorm they hadn’t registered, without the necessary insurance, any official visitor would have them slapped with more money than they could find, and Miriam House would be taken by government and sold.
Hence, putting a Church member into the home as Matron would be a way to maintain the guise of ‘private home’. Further, Mollusk needed to get rid of Cordelia Brown fast, before some other member of the Board wandered into Miriam House and saw the bad paint jobs, the screwy rewiring.
Shortly after Selma Rashford Grindley was installed, the rather sordid facts of Mollusk’s ‘renovations’ came out. Selma Rashford Grindley had taken a stroll to survey ‘her’ kingdom, noticed some paint chips, wire and made announcements to all and sundry.
This caused Mollusk to be dropped to Vice Chairman under Elvis March, to cover up the scam from the members who didn’t know what had happened. Members who paid their dues, attended service, and believed in the church and its leaders.
