Tracie Peterson and Kimberly Woodhouse have written a novel entitled ‘Out of the Ashes’. This is book two of The Story of Alaska series. This is a story of Alaska before it was a state. A story of relationships between Collette and Jean-Michel Langelier and Katherine Demarchis.  In the town of Curry is the primary location of this story. The characters will all endure good times and hardships of many kinds. The power of nature will indeed help to heal emotional and at times physical ills.

‘Out of the Ashes’ is a story that could very easily be used in an English or American literature course that will evoke many kinds of discussions. One of my favorite parts of the book is when the authors used my favorite hymns ‘Jesus Loves Me’ in its’ entirety. It is also a book that uses nature of Alaska’s beauty to help tell the story of Curry, Alaska and the people who made it what it was and is and in its’ heyday of the 1920’s. American history melds well with the fiction of this book. The authors did their research and wrote a book that is descriptive of the times and how they affected the characters in a variety of ways.

Tracie Peterson and Kimberly Woodhouse wrote a story that is a cozy read for a cold night and the reader could enjoy a cup of tea or hot chocolate or even something stronger. ‘Out of the Ashes’ is a book that will let readers read real conversations between the characters and feel as we are a part of the conversation. A Christian book that would make the reader want to learn more about Alaska and how relationships are built and how we can keep learning about ourselves and others. The authors wrote a note explaining even though this is book two the readers do not have to read book one to enjoy this one. ‘Out of the Ashes’ is a book that is a living history of the time. The cover of the book did give interested readers an idea what it could be about and the actual illustration is drawn realistically and this was what lead me to choose this book.
