A Simple Favor, 2018 Movie Review

Monday, May 18, 2020

I woke up late, and I decided to watch the 2018 movie, A Simple Favor. It was based on a novel by Darcey Bell. The movie is suspenseful, but quirky, and it stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Paul Feig, and Jessica Sharzer.

The main character is a single mother who does foodie videos. One day, her son befriends a boy in his class, and she meets his mother when she is picking him up from school. The other boy’s mother has a mysterious, dark, and sophisticated appearance. She kind of reminded me of the movie The Devil Wears Prada. The boy’s mother wears expensive products and accessories; and, in the first scene that they meet, the sophisticated mother walks out of a limo on a rainy day, dressed in black pantsuit, black fedora, colorful stilettos, and carrying a black umbrella. The symbolism behind how this mysterious woman dresses is of witchcraft or satanism. Her personality appears cold and aloof. But the main character, who appears to be a down-to-earth and sweet homemaker, thinks this woman is elegant and glamorous, like a celebrity. She often looks after the woman’s son since the boy is her son’s friend. One day, this woman mysteriously disappears. The main character has many suspicions, especially when she notices strange clues. She starts to question everything as she follows the clues to find her so-called friend and solve the mystery. In the process, she becomes close to her friend’s husband. But there are lots of twists and turns that takes the story into a crazy ride. The main character mother ends up solving the mystery, which has a crazy ending.

Like the book The Devil Wears Prada, Conde Nast bought the story from Darcey Bell, and turned it into a movie. I haven’t read the book, but I am sure the book is better because I liked the book, The Devil Wears Prada better than the movie.
