9 Types of Ribbons for Different Craft Projects and Decorations

Ribbons are an inexpensive and a colorful craft material that are used for many different purposes like for transforming simple wedding décor, wrapping birthday presents, tying a Christmas ornament, wrapping around a wedding cake or even surrounding a ceremonial chair hanging onto gold medals or to make ribbon flowers in a congratulatory banquet.

Due to their low cost and availability of an excellent variety of colors, designs and shapes, ribbons are used all the time for making bows, sashes, wreath, garland, wrapping presents, chair ties, doing ribbon embroidery, making fabric trims, and much more. Now, I’m going to share some different types of ribbons and the best way to use them:

  1. Grosgrain Ribbon: Grosgrain ribbons are essential in any craft closet. Their thick, horizontal fiber provides just the right amount of elasticity for trimming and edging projects. These are very sturdy and supple ribbon. Their durability makes it perfect for collages, scrapbooks, wreath, and bows. It comes in a wide range of colors and patterns so you’re sure to find a ribbon to fit even the most specific color scheme.
  2. Satin Ribbon: Satin ribbon comes in just about every color and is available in both single-face and double-face variations. Due to this reason, it is a favorite among crafters. These are inexpensive ribbons and used for multiple purposes.
  3. Burlap Ribbon: Burlap is a coarse cloth made of jute, flax, or hemp fibers and is ideal for conveying that classic, rustic charm. It is basically used for home décor, gift wrapping, and fun craft projects.
  4. Printed Ribbon: This is one great quality of ribbon that it is almost infinitely customizable. Business and community organizations can commission ribbons with their brand name and logos and brides and grooms can order personalized, printed ribbon for wedding decoration.
  5. Lace Ribbon: Lace ribbons add a touch of elegance to high-end events such as weddings and banquets. It is not durable as grosgrain or satin but makes for an ideal trim on handmade clothes and heirloom dresses. For a touch of rustic elegance, you can layer lace onto the burlap.
  6. Polka Dot Ribbon: Polka dot ribbons are one of the most popular patterns of ribbons that can be used for decoration purposes and even for artwork. You can use this beautiful ribbon at the birthday party, weddings, and various other celebrations.
  7. Mesh Ribbon: Deco is the most popular style of mesh ribbon. It is often used in wreaths, bows, and decorative centerpieces. Mesh ribbon is a favorite for its no-sew capabilities. So, you can simply tie it into a bow or create layers for depth and dimension and you have a stylish accent for many projects.
  8. Tulle Ribbon: Tulle ribbons add elegance to the most formal of occasion and this porous fabric creates a light, airy feel that can turn any garment into a fun and fantastical creation.
  9. Wired Ribbon: Wired ribbons provide flexibility for bows and trim, and their wired edges help to maintain the shape of the final project. Due to its versatility, range of colors, and patterned designs, it is a favorite for florists and the wedding planner.

Now that you are familiar with the different types of fabrics it’s time to experiment yourself. If you love to create DIY craft projects then you can buy ribbons at wholesale prices from quality sellers to save money and get creative by mixing and matching for your craft projects.
