Democracy – 6

When a country which has little experience of democracy now has to elect leaders, the likelihood of this being democratic  is rare.

The first leader might be honestly elected, then virtually refuse to leave office. Sometimes it is the second or third elected leader who turns the nation into a dictatorship.

This is because there needs to be a period when the citizens are made to understand they have power.  A period in which they become educated, interested, and see themselves as having choices and being able to make decisions.

Persons who are not accustomed to having a voice in political issues are hearing a foreign language.   They have no basis, no understanding.  Concerned with daily existence, they have no time to consider what is happening in the wider world, and are easy game for the dictator.
