The Old Lady – 2

Over the years, Miss Ellis did help me with my homework, with understanding current events.

She wasn’t housebound, she went out almost every day, walking with purpose.  She had friends who came by now and then.

But mostly, she stayed alone.

When I was about fourteen, trying to be popular, and invited everywhere,  I considered Miss Ellis the most pathetic person on Earth.

She had no one.

I imagined it was the worst thing in the world to be old and alone.

She didn’t act lonely, she didn’t act sad, she was always in good spirits, at least when I came by.

Yet, the idea of being so old and alone was creepy.
