When I returned from college, to visit my folks I went around to Miss Ellis.
We’d talk of current events, situations. She was the first I told that I had met a man and it was serious.
She didn’t say anything.
I asked her if she had been married.
“Yes, I was. It was a short marriage.”
“Oh.”
And then I asked her what I had always wanted to ask:
“Aren’t you lonely?”
Many people are lonely but put on a happy face.
Some people like their own company, their privacy. They will mingle and have friends and go places, but just like their space.
