It hit Tom so hard, he fell apart. His father had driven off, leaving the Herrara family to die. Maya was dead.
Tom couldn’t survive. He became a drunk, started to use drugs, was found lying on the street. It was the interference of people who’d known Tom all his life which saved him.They got him into a Veteran’s Hospital claiming he’d been wacky since his return from Nam.
They said whatever they needed to get him into care, and have him cleaned up.
While Tom was in the hospital, they kept his job open, they paid his mortgage.
When he emerged, eight months later, everything was as it had been before his breakdown.
Tom went back to work, repaid his debts.
