Tom had been born in the house which had stood here, before his world ended.
He had lived here with his family, his parents and elder sister. Next door lived the Herrera family. Next door lived Maya.
She was his best friend from the age of six.
As the parents didn’t get along, Tom and Maya would meet by the Church playground.
The Church had stood on the corner. There was the school beside and behind it, and then the playground.
As they all belonged to the Church and attended that school, and as all the children in the neighbourhood played there, it was perfectly acceptable for him and for Maya to go to the playground.
