Eric’s half brother, Alvin, despised Steven.
He considered him untrustworthy, a drunk, a fornicator.
Alvin had actually despised David even more, for he was perfect, far better than Alvin’s own children. With David long dead and only the reptilian Steven and clumsy Maggie alive, it was too easy to ridicule Eric’s chilren.
Eric and Alvin owned major shares of the company where Steven worked. Alvin always had insults for Steven. He considered his managerial skills somewhere between the toilet and the sink.
Steve knew this and often proved him right.
