Maggie entered University. She focused on her education. She did well, and graduated. Shortly after, she married a man of her father’s religion.
For his daughter to touch all the bases, from being a virgin to attending school, getting into university, gaining a degree, getting a job, marrying of man of their religion did please Eric.
Further, to make Daddy even prouder, Maggie took up a job teaching at a school which belonged to that religion.
She fought for and earned Eric’s pride.
Steven never would.
Although Eric did not verbalise, it was clear that Steven was and had always been a disappointment. Steven, aware of it, made sure he also fell as far as possible.
In his way, his life was saying; ‘Yes Dad, you are right, I’m a stupid failure and will always be.”
