On Monday morning, as he walked to school, one of the guys asked him why he ‘ran away’ from Lou’s Diner on Friday. Barry didn’t say a word, just took his ticket stub and handed it to the guy.
The guy, Herb, made a lot of exciting noises, and Barry acted nonchalant.
Whatever Herb or anyone said about anything, Barry had set responses ready to go.
Within an hour, the whole school knew that Barry was a fan of the local team. ‘Everyone’ knew that the reason Barry left Lou’s Diner was to get to the game.
Lots of kids asked about this basket or that foul and Barry could speak with authority.
His status began to climb.
