Tales of a Business Trouble Shooter – Part 6 (b)

Demotivation –  Position of Power without Power

Imagine you obtained a job managing an apartment complex. You take the job, get your free accommodation, and then learn that you have absolutely no power whatsoever to do anything.

You can’t toss anyone out. You can’t enforce any of the rules. Everything requires you call a Board Member and they will ‘take action’.

You are there, you are seeing the rules broken, you are having your orders tossed in the trash, you can not demand anything.

You make your first efforts;  you speak to this one or that one. They suck their teeth and continue. You call a Board Member who will get around to you, tomorrow, day after, next week, they forgot.

How long does it take for you to stop making yourself a target and ignoring what happens?

You are responsible, but you have no power to exercise your responsibility.

These situations are not unusual. Many persons are given a management position but have no authority to manage. They are just there.

Giving them power, letting them control the business they are to manage is the only way to insure it runs according to plan. Giving them no power, forcing them into the role of supplicant, soon results in their total demotivation and cessation of effort.
