Icons, Painting and Relics at the Saint Anne’s Shrine

At Saint Anne’s Shrine and Chapel in Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts, there was a room of historic paintings, icons and relics. Some were from the 1500-1600. The images below were from the nineteenth century and show the tradition of covering much of the painting with layers of gold, silver and brass and having just the faces showing. I find them beautiful and unusual.
