The First Time I Crashed a Party

I entered Junior High as a tourist. My mother picked out my clothes for me in the morning, did my hair. I was in school to read my book. I thought that was the purpose of school. Academics.

With this peculiar understanding, I was surely missing the point.

When I was in Final Year of Junior High, at the ripe old age of Fourteen, I suddenly appreciated the ‘culture’ of this strange ‘tribe’ of ‘School Girls’.

I had seen and heard things throughout my previous two years, but it was only in my last year things were put together.

Every class had its ‘Queen’. She went on as if she was beautiful, brilliant, the arbiter of all society, from what was wearing, to what music people were to listen to, what was cool and what was not.

Every grade had its ‘Empress’;  the Queens deferred to her.

But the highest level was the Goddess. She was totally in control of status. If she thought you were uncool, you were socially dead.

One day, the Goddess sent for me. She actually wanted me to do her science homework, but people thought she was summoning me for some accolade.

I agreed to perform this unpaid task.

I would write a pedestrian document for her, and a stellar one for myself.

Every year, the penultimate week of school before the Xmas break, she had  party.  If one was not invited, they were nothing.

Of course I wasn’t invited, but I was going to go as my ‘pay’.

I told my father I was going to study with a girl (who had been invited) and he would pick me up at 9 pm. The address I gave for this girl’s house was two down from the Goddess.

I went to the girl’s house, changed, and arrived early at the party.  I acted as the official greeter so everyone who came in would see me.

The Goddess entered late.

So there I was, wandering around a party to which I had not been invited, acting as if I ruled the place, until She entered.   I kept as far from her as possible, and when I caught an eye, jumped into the bathroom, changed my clothing, and was out on the road with about ten minutes to my father’s arrival.

On Monday, when everyone who had been invited was bragging and boasting, and those who hadn’t were crying and hiding, I strode about.  When confronted by the Goddess, the Empresses and the like, I said, “Fine!” and walked away.

Everyone saw it, no one knew what had happened, and  I made it seem that ‘something’ occurred at the Party, but kept that ‘something’ quiet.

I never did the Goddess’ homework again, but my ‘connection’had so lifted my status, I was elevated to Cool Girl and rode it into into High School.
