Although the New York Jets had a dreadful season, they still ended up 7-9. If they can work out some of their inconsistency, then they could be a surprise team for this upcoming season. Let’s take a look at who the Jets selected in the National Football League (NFL) Draft.
Round 1, Pick 11: Mekhi Becton – T – Louisville (6’7″, 364 lbs). Becton will start right away at one of the tackle positions along the offensive line. He is a large man, but he is very athletic for his size.
Round 2, Pick 27: Denzel Mims – WR – Baylor (6’3″, 207 lbs). Mims will compete for a starting spot at wide receiver. His statistics from last year (66 receptions, 1,020 yards, 12 TD’s) prove that he is capable of being a productive receiver in the NFL.
Round 3, Pick 4: Ashtyn Davis – S – Cal (6’1″, 202 lbs). Davis adds depth to the Jets secondary at the safety position.
Round 3, Pick 15: Jabari Zuniga – DE – Florida (6’3″, 264 lbs). Zuniga dropped in the draft due to injury, but he still had three sacks in six games. If he can stay healthy, then he will bring some more pass-rushing to the defense.
Round 4, Pick 14: La’Mical Perine – RB – Florida (5’11”, 216 lbs). The Jets drafted their second Florida player in a row when they picked Perine. Perine is a versatile RB (667 yds rushing, 262 yds receiving, 11 total TD’s) that should allow for him to see some playing time as a 3rd-down back.
Round 4, Pick 19: James Morgan – QB – FIU (6’4″, 229 lbs). Morgan will be given a chance to compete as a back-up QB.
Round 4, Pick 23: Cameron Clarke – G – Charlotte (6’4″, 308 lbs). Clarke played at tackle in college, but will be moved to guard by the Jets. Clarke will add depth to the offensive line because of his versatility to play at either guard or tackle.
Round 5, Pick 13: Bryce Hall – CB – Virginia (6’1″, 202 lbs). Hall also dropped in the draft due to injuries as well, but his height will help against tall receivers.
Round 6, Pick 12: Braden Mann – P – Texas A&M (5’11”, 198 lbs). Mann will compete for the starting spot at punter. He was one of the top punters in college football over the past two seasons.
Grade: I am absolutely shocked at how well the Jets did in this draft based upon their organizational issues. Zuniga and Hall are absolute steals if they are back to full strength. I give them an A-.
