For two straight seasons, the Jacksonville Jaguars self-destructed. However, there is more optimism this season with a full season having Gardner Minshew starting at quarterback. Nevertheless, the Jags needed to find more overall depth in this year’s NFL Draft. Let’s take a look at who the Jaguars picked.
Round 1, Pick 9: C.J. Henderson – CB – Florida (6’1″, 204 lbs). Henderson was rated as the second-best cornerback in this draft. He will start immediately for the Jaguars because Jacksonville needs to cover wide receivers better than last season.
Round 1, Pick 20: K’Lavon Chaisson – DE – LSU (6’3″, 254 lbs). Chaisson will definitely see time as a possible starter. He will pressure the passer.
Round 2, Pick 10: Laviska Shenault, Jr. – WR – Colorado (6’1″, 227 lbs). Shenault will see plenty of time on offense as a possession receiver. He is also versatile enough to run effectively on end-arounds.
Round 3, Pick 9: DaVon Hamilton – DT – Ohio State (6’4″, 320 lbs). Hamilton is effective at stopping the run with 10.5 tackles for loss last season. He will compete for playing time.
Round 4, Pick 10: Ben Bartch – T – St. John’s (MN) (6’6″, 309 lbs). Bartch will be given time to develop as a back-up at the tackle position.
Round 4, Pick 31: Josiah Scott – CB – Michigan State (5’9″, 185 lbs). Scott should see time in the cornerback rotation.
Round 4, Pick 34: Shaquille Quarterman – LB – Miami (FL) (6’0″, 234 lbs). Quarterman will add depth to the linebacking corps.
Round 5, Pick 12: Daniel Thomas – S – Auburn (5’10”, 215 lbs). As you can see, the Jags need secondary help.
Round 5, Pick 20: Collin Johnson – WR – Texas (6’6″, 222 lbs). That height will be tantalizing in the red zone for the Jaguars offense.
Round 6, Pick 10: Jake Luton – QB – Oregon State (6’6″, 224 lbs). The Jags struck gold last year when they picked Minshew in the 6th round. If it’s not broke, then don’t fix it. Luton will compete for the back-up QB spot.
Round 6, Pick 27: Tyler Davis – TE – Georgia Tech (6’4″, 250 lbs). Davis will compete for a back-up TE spot.
Round 7, Pick 9: Chris Claybrooks – CB – Memphis (5’9″, 175 lbs). Claybrooks will compete for a spot as a kick returner and as a back-up cornerback.
Grade: The Jaguars organization is notorious for not re-signing their impact players, which is why they loaded up this season with 12 draft picks. Fortunately, they drafted well because they need help all over the field. I give them a B-.
