Sometimes I am confused by the things my parents allowed us to do. Looking back I am not sure why they thought a snapping turtle was an acceptable pet. We found him or her in a pond not far from the house.
We brought him to the house every summer. We created a little pond just for him. When we found him there was already a hole in his shell. We got a long chain so he could “get away”. We fed him all sorts of interesting things.
In the fall we would return him to his home. I don’t recall that we ever named the turtle. I can’t imagine why we thought this was normal.
I do like the fact that when they feel threatened they can simply go into their shell. I would have made a great snapping turtle.
