Jane Yolen is one of my favorite authors. She is very accomplished. Many of her books are categorized as fantasy and some of her admirers have compared her to J. R. R.Tolkien. To those fans, I say, “I know you meant that as a compliment to the nice lady. But … no way José! Ms. Yolen need not be compared to any other writer. She has a style all her own.”
My first introduction to Jane Yolen was by reading some of her fantasy books written for children and my first impression did not make me immediately think of Tolkien. But her writings did impress me. So no surprise that the mention of her name in children’s literature circles generates a flurry of high praises, and people will be tempted to make comparisons between her and other successful authors in this genre.
Connecting the dots: A friend in my Facebook network invited me to participate in Good Reads, an online readers community. Based on my profile, via email, they send new releases from authors and/or by genres. For the month of May 2014, the very first book recommendation on the list,“The BloodyTide”, is by Jane Yolen. It’s not a fantasy. It’s a book of fifty plus poems about tragic real-life events: the Boston Marathon bombings, the Holocaust, and more. Not the type of work that I would have expected from Jane Yolen, but not a disappointment either. Glad she thought to publish a poetry collection.
