More About the Red Panda

If you missed the first part you can find it here. I think it this photo it looks like he is dressed for winter. It is simply the fur, no coat available. Remember though he has some awesome fur.

There are some things that are totally unique to this animal. Marking territory is something that many animals do. However there are some things unique to the red panda when it comes to this skill. Red pandas scent-mark territories using anal glands and urine, and glands located between their footpads. From their footpads comes a substance the consistancy of water that we humans can not smell. According to the National Zoo, the red panda tests odors using the underside of its tongue, it has a cone-like structure for collecting liquid and bringing it “close” to a gland inside its mouth. It is the only carnivore with this adaptation.

An adult sized red panda normally weighs about thirteen pounds. Their bodies are about 23 inches long and their tail is anywhere from 14 to 18 inches long. There may be fewer than 2,500 adult red pandas living in the wild today.
