The elementary school called the asked if I could come and get a child. I didn’t ask anything because if the parents are not available, I am the next one on the list. I just hop in the truck and drive because it is over 50 miles away.
When they got there they said he is waiting for you in the safe space. I was confused. Is the office or the nurses area “unsafe” now? I pictured someone huddled in a corner. (yes the picture is a dog, but it still carried the same message in my quirky head.)
Then they took me to the back of the office and he was in a coat closet with no coats hanging up. The hangers were there. He had a bowl that he had thrown up in and I took a few quick pictures with my phone and gathered him up to take home.
A member of staff asked why I took the pictures. I said, “So I can explain to his parents what a safe space room is and where they can get the child if they need to come. She said “I don’t think it’s legal for you to take a picture.”
I said, “If that’s the case you can send an officer to my home. Thanks and have a great day.”
