Back on September 3, 1609, explorer Henry Hudson and his crew on a ship called Half Moon sailed on the Hudson River along the Atlantic coast of America. The crew was from Holland and they were searching for the Northwest Passage. This was a legendary waterway which could carry a ship all the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.

As they passed by the island of Manhattan, which today is part of New York City they made it to the Hudson River. Even though after sailing for a long time Hudson and his crew did not find what they were looking for they did find what would later become the capital of New York State, Albany. At this point, they turned around but the river got the explorer’s name.

Hudson’s explorations of the Hudson River led to Dutch colonization in this area of what today is New York State. The Mohican Indians knew the Hudson Rive as Muhheakunnuk or Great Waters Constantly in Motion. The area was the site of key battles during the American Revolution.The area also inspired landscape artists and the Hudson River School was established to celebrate the natural beauty of the American landscape. Today the Hudson River is one of the nation’s most important waterways. It is navigated by oceangoing ships that sail the river to Albany all year round. You can often see pleasure boats, tugboats, and barges on the river. Cargo ships bring various good to the Great Lakes. You can see the U.S. Military Academy of West Point overlooking the Hudson River.
