Outside Kitchen and Slave Quarters at the McLean House

Behind the McLean House where General Lee surrendered to General Grant ending the Civil War on April 9, 1865, is the McLean outside Kitchen building and slave quarters. These are very nicely preserved log cabin structures built in 1848.  Many fine houses had outside separate kitchens to keep the heat out of the house and the risk of fire down. All this is in the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park in Virginia.
