Barreiro da Faneca – The Red Desert of Santa Maria

The Barreiro da Faneca, on the Santa Maria island, better known as red desert is unique in the Azores. This is a unique protected landscape area of the Azores of approximately 8.35 square km, and includes the Bays of Raposo, Tagarete and Cré. With altitudes that are around 200 meters above sea level, it presents as a relief surface with very smooth slopes, less than 4-5%, and with a very reduced drainage capacity. In areas devoid of vegetation, soil erosion is notorious, and “dunes” caused by wind and water erosion can be observed.

Here are some photos I have taken and I want to share them with you. I hope you will like them.
