Adirondack Canoe Classic Race in Old Forge New York

When I was up in Old Forge, New York in the Southern Adirondacks I saw signs for the great Adirondack Canoe ClassicThe 90-Miler” canoe race from Old Forge to Saranac Lake.  The start was early in the morning at pre-dawn hours and there were hundreds of canoes, Adirondack Guideboats, kayaks and other types of floating craft.  There were many “classes” of boats from singles canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, dual person canoes, massive 6-8 person canoes and even guideboats.  The loudspeakers echoed over the chilly early morning water on this September Autumn day.  It called on different groups to enter the water and when the horn went off there was a frothing of the water from flying paddles.  Below you can see a traditional wood Adirondack Guideboat next to a kevlar canoe.
