We started talking about rodeo here. You know why I enjoy it and it helped with the finances as well. We learned a little about Saddle Bronc and we are moving on. When I was growing up this was called calf roping. PETA got involved and the name changed. Clearly spectators can see they are young cows, but city folk feel better if it is called something different.
This is a timed sport. The calf is released and gets a bit of a head start. If the roper comes out too fast, they have broken the barrier and get a no time. They are carrying a pigging rope, most of them in their mouth. This rope is used to tie the legs of the calf together. They must first rope the calf with a clean head throw, get off the horse, tie the legs and get back on the horse. The calf must stayed tied or it is a no time.
This takes more than just a great athlete. It takes a well trained horse, who knows when it time to take some backward steps and keep the rope tight, even before the roper gets back in the saddle.
If you have never seen it in actions you can go here.
