There is only one sports curse that is worse than the Drake curse; that curse belongs to none other than Benfica. The curse started back in 1962 after Benfica had won another European title. However, Benfica wanted to be cheap and decided not to give coach Bela Guttman a raise. Guttman then stated that Benfica would not win another European trophy for the next 100 years.
Fast-forward to now – 57 years later, Benfica had its best chance to win the UEFA Europa League this season. Benfica had already won the first leg of the quarterfinals 4-2 over Eintracht Frankfurt at home with Joao Felix becoming the youngest player ever to score a hat trick in European play. All that Benfica had to do was to sit back and prevent Eintracht from scoring two goals. Alas, Benfica lost 2-0 to Frankfurt. Don’t worry, Benfica fans. You will have to wait another 43 years before celebrating another European title because a big-name club will be signing the best Benfica player in 20 years to a big-time contract in the summer.
