After making an improbable return back into the NBA Playoffs last season, the Brooklyn Nets decided to go big in the offseason by bringing in Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and DeAndre Jordan. Brooklyn was unable to re-sign DeAngelo Russell, but were able to keep the remaining young core that was the catalyst behind their breakthrough season. Let’s see if the Nets were able to add to their lineup by taking a look at who they picked in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Pick #31: Nicolas Claxton, C, Georgia. 6’10”, 217 lbs. (13 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 2.5 bpg). Claxton will be given time to develop either on the bench behind Jordan and Jarrett Allen or in the G League. Although he will have to add some weight in order to handle the physicality of the NBA, his quickness and his rebounding ability will translate well to the next level as the game is moving towards having centers that are quick enough to defend pick-and-roll plays.

Pick #56: Jaylen Hands, G, UCLA. 6’3″, 180 lbs. (14.2 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 6.1 apg). Hands has the prototypical size that the NBA is currently looking for in a point guard. Although he was effective at point guard with over six assists per game, UCLA really had a disappointing season. With the amount of guards that are currently on the Nets roster, Hands will either be fighting for a roster spot or be sent to the G League.
Grade: The Brooklyn Nets clearly focused on free agency this season. Both of these picks will be given time to develop because the Nets roster is pretty much set. The Nets are hoping that one of these two will take the time to improve their skills within the next couple of years. I give them a D-.
