The Atlantic Coast Conference is usually one of the best conferences in college basketball. However, graduation and early entrees into the NBA have left the ACC looking sort of lopsided this season. Nevertheless, the show must go on. Here are my picks in the ACC.
1. Duke. When Marvin Bagley III decided to go to Duke, then this decision made putting the Blue Devils first in the ACC rather easy. The only intrigue about this season is which date you received in the Grayson Allen tripping an opponent pool.
2. Louisville. Although the Cardinals are being investigated because of the dealings of former coach Rick Pitino, the Cardinals are absolutely loaded with Quentin Snider again leading the team at point along with a plethora of lengthy wing players.
3. Miami. The Hurricanes could possibly have the best backcourt in the ACC.
4. Notre Dame. The duo of Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell should do some major damage in conference play.
5. North Carolina. Four of the top five scorers from last season’s championship team have gone on to greener pastures.
6. Virginia Tech. The Hokies are a strange team to gauge because all five starters return, but they lost their top two scorers to graduation. However, a strong freshman class will help increase the depth of the team and will also help cure their defensive woes.
7. Virginia. That loss in the NCAA Tournament last March may linger.
8. Georgia Tech. If the suspended backcourt of Josh Okogie and Tadric Jackson are allowed back to the team before conference play begins, then the Yellow Jackets could end up higher in the standings. The NCAA would be totally bogus to keep them out for the entire season.
9. Florida State. The Seminoles really need to learn how to play on the road. Put some toughness within their hearts.
10. Clemson. The Tigers lost six conference games last season by three points or less. They cannot be that unlucky this season.
11. Syracuse. Beware of the 2-3 zone.
12. Wake Forest. Where is the frontcourt?
13. North Carolina State. The Wolfpack will be rebuilding this season.
14. Boston College. When your top returning rebounder is 6′ 1″, then that means that these Eagles will not be soaring this season.
15. Pittsburgh. The Panthers are in full rebuilding mode with all five starters graduating from a team that went 4-14 in conference play last season.
