Champion Trees at Congaree National Park

Congaree National Park is in Eastern South Carolina State and has a very large wetlands and old growth bottomland hardwood forest. The Congaree river floods the forest several times a year and brings in nutrients. This causes the trees that can survive so much water to grow huge over time. There are many Champion trees here that are the biggest in the state or even biggest in the United States. Congaree National park has 15 species of the tallest trees in the United States including the Loblolly Pine, Sweetgum, Cherrybark Oak, an Elm, Swamp Chestnut Oak, Persimmon and Laurel Oak. This smooth barked deciduous tree was found on the boardwalk trail.
