Gender Bias In The Doc’s Bog

My temporary accommodation in Sheffield is of the one-toilet type so after hopping around for a quarter of an hour because its occupant didn’t exit, I left the house in a hurry and made it to an appointment at doc’s surgery with some minutes to spare. After asking to bog-use, I rushed in and seated myself, indulging in the luxury of a toilet pan all to myself (a luxury half the world – or more probably – doesn’t possess!). Seated thereon and therein, I gazed around and lo and behold there were three notices about domestic violence, none showing an abused male. Hence, the idea of gender bias in that it is not just women who get punched in the home. Indeed, in America, men are regularly abused but ashamed to report that their hefty spouse has given them a punch or a kick. Having performed, I exited and was told the nurse had been shouting for me for some time. I laughingly explained that I was there to get an ear syringed and one or two waiters smiled and found me a friendly, old codger.

“That’s why yer couldn’t hear.”

“Yep,” I replied, “and also in the toilet, taking a dump and thinking about gender-bias…” I wanted to say, but didn’t. (How many times do we have to content ourselves with thinking something without saying it?)

Into the nurse’s room I went. Therein, I mentioned that all the posters showed women abused but men sometimes were…and certainly children, boys and girls, yes, certainly. Oh, a bit of a frosty silence then nurse ejaculated, “Meant to refer to both sexes.”

“Images don’t…” More frost of silence, then I got my right ear successfully warm-watered and out came the offending wax.

So, what am I rabbiting on about here? Nothing much ‘cos where else in the world would you get a free ear-wax liberation fix? And where else would you see women, just women, victims of domestic violence? I left said surgery, happy to be once again fully empowered in the old ear-drum capacity, came home, found the bog free (Murphy’s law) and cogitated on how men are victimised in the UK!
