Heading off to college can be an exciting and scary time in your life. You may be away from home and all the things that you know for the first time. Don’t be surprised if it takes a while to feel comfortable in your new digs.
Most high school seniors will tell you that they can’t wait to have a little piece of independence that comes with going away for school. Keep in mind, those same seniors will undoubtedly feel the pinch of homesickness at the same time.
Whether you are living in a dorm or in off campus housing the first thing to do is to make the space yours. This is your opportunity to take charge of exactly how you want your living space to be so let your style shine. Here are a few tips to help you make your new place feel a bit more like home.
Make It Your Own
In your childhood bedroom, you may not have had the chance to have things just how you want them. Now is your time. Choose bedding, wall art, and colors that really reflect your personality. Surround yourself with a style that feels comfortable to you. This is your chance to really show off your personal taste. Express yourself through your color and style choices. Maybe you always wanted a room filled with bright colors, or a more modern and minimalist feel. It’s all up to you to be your most creative to help make your space feel like it fits you.
Comforts of Home
If you have a favorite blanket or pillow make sure that it makes the trip to school with you. Never underestimate the soothing power of a comfort item from home. You can also easily create a memory board using a cork board to post pictures and memories from home to help keep you company when you are missing family and friends. Don’t forget to add new photos and memories to your board as you make them.
Plants
Adding plants to your space can have many advantages. Not only can they add a great level of fresh oxygen to your room but they can also add a softness that is lacking in many dorm rooms. Give yourself a little boost and add a nice hanging fern or a small basket of succulents to bring a bit of life into your space. It can give you a bit of responsibility as well, as you try to care for and maintain your plants.
Lights
The overhead lights that you will find in most dorm rooms and apartments can be harsh and much too bright. Installing mini-blinds on your windows can help you regulate the amount of natural light that you want as well as give you privacy. Keep the overhead fluorescent lights off and invest in a cool standing lamp or a desk lamp instead. You will want to keep your room bright enough to work, but the softer bulb lights are much better for the atmosphere that you are trying to create.
Sounds like there is some excellent advice here.
