You might not recognize this American vocal group from New York City right away but The Crystals were a popular girl group in the 1960s charting such popular singles as “There’s No Other (Like My Baby)”, “Uptown”, “He’s a Rebel”, “Da Doo Ron Ron (When He Walked Me Home)” and “Then He Kissed Me”. The Crystals were Barbara Alston, Mary Thomas, Dolores “Dee Dee” Kenniebrew, Myrna Giraud and “Patricia “Patsy” Wright.
They became famous after the release of their classic single “Da Doo Ron Ron” which became a hit in both the U.S. and the U.K. In 1964 The Crystals went to the U.K. and their song “Then He Kissed Me” rose to number two on the charts in the U.K. However they didn’t manage to score with other singles such as “My Place” and “You Can’t Tie a Good Girl Down”. Their last single was “Ring-a-Ting-a-Ling” and they disbanded in 1967. They came together for a reunion in 1971 and still tour and perform today with different members.
The Crystals song “Then He Kissed Me” was used as the opening song in the movie “Adventures in Babysitting” in 1987 as Elisabeth Shue danced around her bedroom. The same song was also used in the movie “Goodfellas” as Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco enter the Copacabana on their first real date. It was featured in a Simpsons episode “Homer and Marge a Couple Play” in 2006. Their song “Da Doo Ron Ron” was playing during a scene in a dance club in the movie Quadrophenia in 1979 and it was used by Russel/Harold Ramis in the 1981 comedy Stripes to train ESL students. In 2012 on Mad Men the song “He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)” was used in the episode “Mystery Date”.
