Tips for a DIY relocation

Start organizing early

Start planning at least 45 days before the day you shift – it will give you sufficient time to think and plan things. If you live everything for the last day, the chances of messing are higher. The last day should be ideally for bidding farewell, and it should not be wasted in a rush through packing.

Strategize

How will you move from your current location to the new one? Do you need to hire a vehicle, or is your own vehicle sufficient? Do you have any friends who can help you in the process? Do any of your family members have any dust allergy (they should ideally be kept away while relocating)? Plan well to avoid last-minute hassle!

Utilize this time to declutter

Take this opportunity to get rid of things that you haven’t been using for ages. You can either organize a backyard sale or donate the clothes and other unused items. It will not only help you to declutter, but it will also make you packing and unpacking a lot easier.

Packing kits help

In case more than one person is packing, it will help you to stay organized by establishing a packing kit. Prepare lists with details of items in each room and let a person responsible for that room have a respective list. Have a pen, marker, and packing materials, like boxes, tapes, dispensers, and newspapers.  Labeling the boxes help while unpacking, and the list ensures that nothing important is misplaced. It is good to label each side with a marker as it will make it easier to find what you need.

Use reusable boxes

Relocation requires cardboards, bubble wraps, and newspapers, and they also create a lot of wastes. You can try to minimize it by either grabbing cardboard boxes from your local grocery stores or rent reusable boxes. This way, you will not reduce wastage but also save a lot on your relocation cost. If you have to relocate often, then keep these boxes carefully and reuse them.

Keep a box aside for the final day

While it is better to pack everything before the last day, you will always need certain things like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, clothes, etc. till the last moment. So, you cannot pack them beforehand, and keeping a box aside for these items come very handy. You can shove in the last-minute items in it before moving out.

Take help

If you have a baby or pet in the house, take the help of your friends or neighbors to take care of them.
