George Kistler at the Gettysburg Battlefield

One soldier at the Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania at the National Military park was George Kistler of the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded in the Peach Orchard and clung onto a sapling tree. He used the sapling tree as a crutch-cane and hobbled off of the field. As he recovered in the hospital he carve the end of the sapling cane in the shape of a boot and the cane is still there today in the National Military Park Museum.
