‘Carol Elder’ applied for positions in distant cities. When she succeeded, she lied about where she was going. This was just in case, somehow, her abusive husband George followed.
Jayne had, during the time here, changed her hair colour and style. She would change again in her new city.
She thought about her husband, her children, but was too afraid to phone anyone. She assumed her babies were safe with his mother. But she didn’t feel safe from George.
In the new city she rented a flat, lived her Carol life.
Months passed and she was feeling whole. She was dating, she was happy and wouldn’t think about George or the children. She wouldn’t think about anything but here and now.
But being in one place, virtually alone, would make her wake at night, thinking every noise was the vicious violent George.
So, she again sent out her resumes, took a job in another city, and lied about her destination to those who had been her friends.
