Pit Children – 54

What confirmed Julie’s turn around occurred a few months later. A gift basket arrived on Sandra’s birthday.

Julie used to send baskets to her mother on her birthday and mothers day, but stopped.  Sandra knew it was the interference of John.

John, Julie’s half brother, who, some years ago, attacked Sandra for sending him an ecard.  When Julie ceased to send her mother a basket, but an ecard, she knew the Puppet Master had triumphed.

But Sandra had said nothing.  She knew, but was silent.  Had been silent.

Now…

The basket was huge.   Sandra appreciated that her watch and wait protocol had been correct.

She felt to call her daughter Julie immediately, but didn’t.  Just as she had evidenced no surprise when the baskets ceased, she would not betray surprise now.  She would wait until Sunday.

Sandra would make her usual Sunday afternoon call as if she hadn’t noticed anything strange about the years between then and now, the years that her pit brothers had laboured to Julie against her mother.

Sandra had the feeling that Paul and John would try again to destroy the relationship.

Hopefully, Julie would not let herself be played twice.
