Oliver’s mother worked nights. She’d leave about 9 pm and return about 7 am. She arrive, do breakfast, not really for Oliver, but her little girl. After feeding her, she’d she’d take to day care, then come home go to bed.
A neighbour would pick up the little girl, along with her own, and had usually kept them over at her house. With Oliver here there needed to be someone home to open the door when he arrived.
It took Oliver’s mother about two weeks to figure out that getting him a key would be a good idea. The neighbour had not arrived, and Oliver, had pounded on the door to get in and woke her.
She was so angry she nearly punched him, but then, gave him a key.
For Oliver, having the key was a gift. He decided to stop coming home from school when it let out. He’d stay in the library until five, when it closed then walk home.
In this way, he caught up on all his lessons after two weeks.
