Oyster Shucking In Maryland

If you don’t know what is oyster shucking then it is the way you pry open the oyster shell and detach the oyster. Every October the U.S. state of Maryland features the St. Mary’s Oyster Festival in Leonardtown.

This festival celebrates the oyster season on the Chesapeake Bay and recognizes the fishermen who spend their lives working the waters. Over 150,000 oysters are eaten at the two-day festival. To shuck them a special knife is used, Among the events is the National Oyster Shucking Championship. Oysters can be eaten raw or cooked.
