In New Orleans, Louisiana people enjoy celebrating Mardi Gras. In French, this translates to Fat Tuesday and comes the day before Ash Wednesday. The festivities start off a season of fasting known as Lent which leads Christians to Easter Sunday.
The reason for calling this celebration Fat Tuesday is that before beginning to fast people enjoy eating meat and fatty foods. In New Orleans Mardi Gras is a time for great festivity with extravagant parades and masked balls. It is enjoyed by large crowds as the parade floats go by and trinkets are thrown in among the people. The Mardi Gras in New Orleans is the most well-known but there are other countries that have their own kind of Mardi Gras.
