Health and Safety at Work (Part One)

Occupational safety and health (OSH) is concerned with (and deals with) everything that affects the safety, health, and welfare of people at work; or in the workplace.

Everyone in every workplace, in every country, and in every area of work; has at one time, or another, dealt with matters to do with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) – or, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH).

This comprehensive compliance arises primarily, because: everyone in every workplace is required by law, to be aware of their responsibilities, their due of care and their required actions; with regards to the applicable, occupational health and safety matters affecting them; either as employers, or as employees.

Such universal compliance demonstrates the extreme importance, which everyone is required to attach to implementing good Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the workplace by governments, their regulatory agencies, the courts, various international enforcement quangos and the United Nations.

Legislation and statute law, in countries across the world, impose various general duties and specific duties on all employers; to regulate their workplace safety and health issues; and formulate action plans.

As such; employers in all countries, have a common law duty to take reasonable care of the health and safety of their employees. This duty is enforced in most nations, by various legislation and their statutory agencies; and their respective courts of law.

Also, almost all UN-recognised countries have created government bodies and statutory agencies with enforcement powers to ensure that these health and safety duties and laws are complied with across all of their industries; and in all areas of work and employment.

Although the details of these health and safety regulations, standards, requirements and enforcements may vary from country to country; and from jurisdiction to jurisdiction; – the general terms, goals and contents of health and safety remain generally similar everywhere.

Occupational safety and health (OSH), is commonly known throughout the world, by any of the following inter-changeable terms: Health and Safety at Work (HSW) – Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) – Occupational Health -Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) – or simply as, – Health and Safety (H & S).

The general aims and objectives of all occupational safety and health (OSH) programs are, as follows: a) To create and foster a safe and healthy environment in the workplace. b) To protect workers and anyone who might be affected by the workplace environment.

The occupational health and safety protection afforded by the law covers, (and includes), the following groups of people in the workplace: – All workers, co-workers, employers, customers, visitors, suppliers, contractors (and in certain cases, family members too).

Occupational safety and health (OSH), is a multi-disciplinary field with many subsets and disciplines, which need to be observed; in order to comply with the various crucial regulatory frameworks and standards, that have been set across all industries, and areas of work, in the world.
