I have noticed that since I’ve lost weight I have become more vain. For me this means that I actually look at myself in the mirror. I take pictures of myself. This is a lot for me. I never cared much for appearances, because I always want to know what is beneath the surface. Appearances are just that–surface conditions. They don’t mean much more than that, but now that I actually like my own reflection, I have become rather vain.
My brain has taken me to more places though. I know I can always rely on it. I am not one to fall for flattery, so, like this quote says, if you really want to compliment me, you will compliment my intelligence. This will always be true for me.
I am always suspicious of anyone who would compliment my appearance. Not because I don’t believe them, but because I believe that appearances, at their core, are temporary. In Spanish, you see, the phrase, “te miras bonita,” for example is not the same as the phrase, “Eres bella.” The first phrase means that you look pretty. The second phrase means you are beautiful.
Looking, or having a certain appearance, is not the same as being something. Who you are will never change. Your appearance will always change. In Spanish, these differences are made very clear. It’s written into the language. It takes a lot more effort to explain these same concepts in English.
For your own peace of mind, you should actually cultivate your mind. Don’t just go to the gym and exercise. Most people can do that. Do things that stimulate you mentally, and creatively. You can read, write, or watch something on KPBS. Don’t fall for flattery so easily. Don’t be so easily manipulated. You know, if you spend time stimulating your brain, you will find out who you are. Once you find out who you are, you won’t easily stumble when someone tries to get their way around you.
Do things that stimulate you mentally, and creatively. ….
Great instruction
Thank you very much. Reading makes sense, but writing reveals what you already know!!
nice
Thank you. I will be writing another post tomorrow!!
Good article, our brain is more powerful than we thought it is.
Yes it is. We underestimate it’s importance in a culture that values external looks more than brain power!!
oh yes!!!
Thank you so much!! I hope to help people gain some clarity on important issues.
