THE CHANGED SONG
I brought myself
by slender means
to a low cove
in a cliff-wall sea
where kittiwakes notched
the burdened air
in ones and twos and trebles of threes,
though all I had wished
was to sing some silly praise of you
and compose such a shimmer of prayer
that the world would kneel
and blossoms make love to air.
My song would have chosen
the wrinkles you wish to undo
and the sheer dark shadows under your eyes
and a sidelong glance or two.
But now in the white lash
flesh of the lance of the waves,
the reorientation of heart and mind,
where the kittiwakes keen,
I have plundered the fattening waves for salt
and bound my bindings and broken my dreams.
