Salisbury Cathedral

The West Front lost most of its statues during the 17th century when they were torn down by Cromwell's troops. These are relatively recent replacements.

This is often regarded as the finest example of a Gothic west front in England. It dates from the mid 13th century.

A ready-made frame!

Cloisters are normally associated with monastic institutions, but Salisbury was always a `secular` establishment -meaning that it was not part of an abbey or monastery. Even so, it was provided with an extremely fine cloister.

Salisbury Cathedral Close is also a showground for some dramatic pieces of modern sculpture.

The Cathedral dominates the city and can be seen from almost anywhere.
